Brain Science for Better Leadership with Dr. Lisa Riegel

In this episode, Rachel Harrison speaks with Dr. Lisa Riegel, leadership strategist and creator of the NeuroWell Framework, about why most organizational change efforts fail and what brain science reveals about how to fix that. Dr. Riegel opens with a foundational idea that runs through all of her work: behavior is always the intersection of biology and context, and when leaders understand that, they stop seeing resistant employees and start seeing brains that feel unsafe. From there, the conversation moves into the gap between aspirational leadership and operational leadership, why people do not hate meetings but do hate bad ones, and how the systems leaders build either support or quietly undermine the people inside them. The second half of the conversation gets into the structure of the 8C Framework, walking through how each element from culture and clarity to coaching, communication, and celebration plays a role in either fueling or draining the people inside an organization. Dr. Riegel breaks down the four types of talking that leaders need to master, directive, dialogue, data analysis, and discussion, and explains how conflating them is one of the most common drivers of disengagement and burnout. She closes with a practical mind-body reset routine any leader can start tomorrow, and a reframe that is both simple and profound: when we see someone out of control, we are not talking to that person. We are talking to an unconscious part of their brain that believes it is in danger.
